  1. Can you provide a brief overview of your current role and the main responsibilities associated with it?

As the Global Head of Facilities, I am responsible for overseeing the maintenance operations of over 35 properties worldwide, including office buildings, hotels, luxury villas, and industrial warehouses. My role involves strategic planning for preventive maintenance, ensuring adherence to safety and regulatory standards, managing operational budgets, and driving sustainability initiatives. I lead a team of five senior facilities managers based in Costa Rica, the USA, Greece, Nigeria, and Bulgaria, ensuring seamless and efficient operations across all regions.

2. What does a typical day look like for you in your current position?

A typical day in my role involves a combination of project monitoring, operational planning, and financial control. I begin by reviewing reports from the senior facilities managers on their respective properties, addressing any immediate issues, and evaluating the progress of ongoing projects. I also focus on financial management, which includes reviewing budgets and approving expenditures. Additionally, I dedicate time to long-term strategic planning, exploring new technologies and practices to enhance efficiency and sustainability across our facilities.

3. What aspects of your job do you find most rewarding and fulfilling?

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the tangible impact of our efforts to improve the functionality and efficiency of our assets. Solving complex challenges and enhancing the overall experience for our tenants and guests gives me a deep sense of accomplishment. Implementing sustainability initiatives and seeing them come to life in new projects is particularly fulfilling, as these efforts not only reduce operational costs but also make our properties more attractive in the market by aligning with current trends. Moreover, leading a diverse team of talented professionals and witnessing their growth and success is another source of great satisfaction.

4. Are there any skills or areas of expertise that you feel are particularly crucial for success in your current role?

Success in my role hinges on several key skills and areas of expertise. Strong leadership and communication are vital for managing a diverse, global team and ensuring alignment with our strategic objectives. Expertise in facilities management and sustainability practices is crucial for upholding high operational standards and meeting our sustainability goals. Financial acumen is equally important for managing budgets and optimizing expenditures. Additionally, problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to new technologies and regulatory changes are essential for continuously enhancing our operations and maintaining a competitive edge in the industry.

5. What did you aspire to be when you were a child?

As a child, I was always captivated by the world of automobiles. My fascination grew as I played with toy cars, learned to fix them, and memorized different brands and models. This early passion inspired me to pursue a career as a car mechanic. When I entered university, I sought a path that aligned with automotive mechanics, ultimately choosing to study industrial maintenance with a focus on combustion engines, the closest program available at my institution.

My enthusiasm for the automotive industry remains as strong as ever, especially with the rise of new technologies like electric mobility. Being part of this transformative era in automotive technology is both exciting and inspiring, further igniting my passion for the industry.

6. Did you ever envision, during your youth, that you would eventually find yourself working in the real estate/hospitality sector?

In the early years of my career, I spent considerable time supervising electrical and HVAC installations, which solidified my decision to pursue a career in construction and systems maintenance. As I advanced professionally, I found that the real estate and hospitality sectors offered an ideal platform to apply my skills and interests in a dynamic and impactful way. The realization that good design practices, project management, sustainability, maintenance, and energy management could all converge within the real estate industry was when I knew I had found my true calling.

7. What activities do you enjoy doing in your free time? What are you most passionate about?

One of my favorite ways to unwind is spending quiet time with my wife and our dogs. We love escaping to the mountains, where we can immerse ourselves in the forest, breathing in the fresh air and taking in the natural beauty and wildlife. Watching the sunrise and sunset surrounded by nature is one of my greatest pleasures.

8. What is the best place you have ever been to?

I’ve been fortunate to visit many unforgettable places, each with its own unique charm. However, if I had to choose, Positano in Italy, Zion National Park in Utah, and Lagos in Portugal stand out as particularly special.

9. What do you consider to be the happiest moment in your life?

Instead of identifying a single day, I view the present as the happiest time of my life. I’m fortunate to have a strong, loving relationship with my loved ones, which gives me a solid foundation of support and joy. My career has progressed steadily, allowing me to achieve many of my professional goals while working in a field I’m passionate about. I have reached a level of maturity that allows me to balance professional responsibilities with personal fulfillment. This blend of personal and professional achievements, along with a sense of continuous growth and stability, brings me immense satisfaction and happiness.

10. Is there anything pending on your bucket list that you would like to do in your lifetime?

Yes, there is a major achievement on my bucket list that I aspire to accomplish. I plan to design, build, and develop a sustainable off-grid cabin in the tropical forests of Costa Rica. This project would unite my passions for sustainability, architecture, and nature, allowing me to create a living space that seamlessly blends with its surroundings. It would be a showcase of innovative design and sustainable living, serving as both a personal retreat and an example of eco-friendly development.
